Barring any intervention by Governor Inuwa Yahaya, the Speaker of the Gombe state House of Assembly, Hon. Abubakar Luggerewo, could be impeached by some aggrieved members of the house.
Daylight Reporters gathered that plot thickened to remove the Speaker since last week but for the immediate intervention of the governor who was due to present the 2022 appropriation bill to the house.
Consequently, Daylight Reporters gathered further, the tension was doused until recently when 13 members from the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC and 3 members from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, jointly signed to impeach the Speaker.
Confirming the brewing crisis in the house to our reporter, minority leader of the house, Hon. Ahmadu A. Ahmadu, said the Speaker is running the affairs of the assembly without following the laid down procedures and the rules of the house.
As a result, the minority leader said, the legislature now vowed to remove him to pave the way for a better leadership.
“It’s sad and unfortunate that the Speaker is running the affairs of the house in aberration to the laid down procedures.
“It has never happened in the history of Gombe state or in any assembly in the world where a budget that has to do with spending public funds would be passed to a third reading without the two-third of the members of the house,” he said.
Hon. Ahmadu stressed the determination of the house to remove the speaker.
“Three of our members were invited by the DSS and security operatives have been deployed at the assembly premises, but that would not in any way deter us from exercising our democratic rights,” he disclosed.
An eye witness confirmed to Daylight Reporters that eleven (11) members out of the twenty four (24) have sat and passed the 2022 appropriation bill to a third reading.
