Fuel Price Increase: Transportation Costs Take a Toll on Commuters In Gombe
By Muhammad Faruk Bayu
The recent fuel price hike by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has sent shockwaves across the country, with transportation fares soaring to unprecedented heights.
The increase, which saw petrol prices jump from ₦650 to ₦924 per liter at the NNPC stations while independent marketers sell the commodity at the cost of over N1,000, has left commuters reeling as they struggle to cope with the rising costs.
Usman Abubakar, a daily driver in Gombe State, lamented the situation, stating that the fuel price hike has led to a noticeable drop in passengers traveling between states.
“People are struggling to cope with the rising transportation costs, and I fail to see any benefit from this decision.
“The poor are bearing the brunt of the hardship, especially since the removal of the fuel subsidy.”, he said.
Meanwhile, in response to the fuel price hike, Gombe Line, the state government owned transportation company, has updated its fares.
According to Malam Ansaru, a staff member, the new fares are as follows: Abuja: ₦13,000 (up from ₦12,000), Kaduna: ₦13,000 (up from ₦12,000), Lagos: ₦27,000 (up from ₦25,000), Kano: ₦7,000 (up from ₦6,000) and Bauchi: ₦3,500 (up from ₦2,500).
He added that Katsina: ₦11,000 (up from ₦10,000), Jos: ₦6,500 (up from ₦5,000), Maiduguri: ₦9,000 (up from ₦8,000)
While fares to some local governments in the state are as follows; Kumo: ₦1,000 (up from ₦700), Billiri: ₦1,200 (up from ₦1,000), Kaltungo: ₦1,400 (up from ₦1,100), Nafada: ₦2,500 (up from ₦2,200), Dukku: ₦1,700 (up from ₦1,500), Yola: ₦5,000 (up from ₦4,000) and Bajoga: ₦1,700 (up from ₦1,500)
