The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has appealed to motorists for cooperation to ensure smooth flow of traffic on the Lokoja-Abuja road.
The Corps Public Education Officer, ACM Bisi Kazeem, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.
NAN reports that there was a gridlock caused by an accident involving two articulated vehicles on a single lane on Saturday at the Gegu-Koton Karfe axis of the road.
Motorists had to use a single lane on the Murtala bridge as maintenance work was taking place on the second lane.
Kazeem said that the Corps was equal to the task reminding the people that a collective responsibility of the stakeholders would also help achieve the desired result.
“We cannot do it alone, we are only regulators but the buck of the achievement depends largely on your cooperation.
“On our part, we have deployed more personnel and logistics from component commands to Gegu-Koton Karfe large section of the road.
“This is also as part of measures to intensify patrols and surveillance to forestall any ugly situation.
“We have deployed two patrol cars, heavy duty tow truck and 50 personnel in all from Abuja to help in the operations
“We are managing traffic by using one part of the bridge to accommodate outward and inward Abuja traffic coupled with the repairs ongoing on the bridge to also avoid driving facing oncoming traffic,” he said.
Kazeem advised against travelling late into the night and to always patronise authourised parks and garages to ensure safety.
He urged leaders of different transport unions to educate their drivers on the need to be tolerant and give adequate regard to other road users
