A former Nigerian Chief of Army Staff, Major General Alwali Kazir, (rtd), has alleged that the popular Hausa-language television station, Arewa24, is a tool of the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) aimed at eroding Islamic values and cultural traditions in northern Nigeria.
In a widely circulated opinion piece, the former Army boss said the media organization is not owned by Nigerians but was created under the guise of countering Boko Haram extremism.
According to him, Arewa24 true purpose was to promote Western ideologies that contradict the region’s religious and cultural identity.
“The CIA launched the TV channel Arewa24 to eliminate Islamic values from our core cultural values, thus leaving Muslims in the North at the mercy of all kinds of immorality,” Kazir alleged in the write up.
He alleged that the channel subtly encourages behaviors such as drinking, alcoholism, disregarding religious practices, and promoting Western social norms, including LGBTQ+ rights.
He further accused the station of scheduling entertainment programs during prayer times to distract young people from their religious obligations.
Kazir criticized the platform for highlighting artists and celebrities who, according to him, do not embody Islamic morality, potentially influencing younger generations away from traditional values.
