Flooding: Jigawa Govt spents N3b on provision of food, shelter, medication to victims

Foodstuffs comprise of Rice in large consortium, Maize, Supergetti Salt, Vegetable oil, medication worth over N3B have so far disbursed by Jigawa state government through the State Emergency Relief Agency, ( SEMA) to over 15,000 flood victim’s whom were taking refugee’s at 15 different IDP’S Camp’s in jigawa state as stated by the Agency’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Haruna Mairiga while Fielding questions from newsmen in his office in Dutse.
He further stated that, the Agency had taken necessary measures against further future, assuring we will adopt certain measures in earnest in case of future eventualities.
His words:- “Government is up and doing to bring to an end of the annual devastating flood”.
He stated the State government is equally solicited more assistance from all and sundry to assist the affected victims.
According to him, the flood was caused by the flow of a river from Plateau State down to Zandam village in Gwaram local government area resulting in the unfortunate incident.
According to Dr. Mairiga, other places affected by the devastating flood includes Nasarawa, Fagam all in Gwaram likewise Garki and other settlements were all submerged due to heavy rainfall.
The damages recorded at respective places where thousand houses collapsed resulting in the death of 46 persons, with over 12,000 hectares of farmland & other 9,000 hectares across the affected 18 local government areas all over the state were submerged.
This year’s jigawa flooding affects 18 out of 27 local government areas of Jigawa state, the Executive Secretary of the state emergency relief agency (SEMA) Dr. Haruna Magaji, made a passionate appeal for succour.
The Executive Secretary explained that the flood reached an alarming level that must call for immediate assistance from individuals, organizations, philanthropists and other general public.
He commended Governor Umar Namadi for his commitment and timely intervention in taking prompt measures in rendering assistance to the affected victims through the provision of food, shelter and medication to amiolerate their sufferings.
Reports has indicated that the devastating flood has displaced over 15,000 household’s whom are now taking shelters at various primary and post primary schools soundly enjoying needed facilities as if they are in their respective houses and settlements.
