The Federal Government has awarded a contract for the rehabilitation of a two-kilometer road network at the University of Jos for the sum of N89 million, with a three-month completion date.
The road to be rehabilitated is the one linking the gate of the Naraguta hostel to the Abuja hostel at the permanent site of the institution.
Handing over the project to the contractor on Monday, in Jos, Mr Babatunde Fashola, Minister of Works and Housing, said that the project was part of the ministry’s interventions.
The Minister, who was represented by Mr Usman Abubakar, a Deputy Director in the Ministry and Controller of Works, in Plateau, explained that the project would include bush clearing, rehabilitation of existing failed sections, patching of potholes, overlaying the road, construction of drainages and culverts.
Fashola promised to ensure that the project was completed within the specifications, with strict adherence to the specified standard.
Prof. Gray Ejikeme, the acting Vice-Chancellor of the university, thanked the federal government for the intervention, saying that the gesture would contribute to the growth and development of the institution, as well as transform, add value and beautify the physical environment of the university.
“This road if completed, will reduce the difficulties that the staff, students and visitors to the university faced on daily basis,” he added.
The acting vice chancellor urged the contractor to ensure speedy completion of the project and ensure its quality.
On his part, Mr Sajo Mohammed of Jurmi Development Company, the contracting firm, promised to ensure timely completion of the project and within the specifications.
