After many outcry from the public calling on the President to speak urgently on the lingering #ENDSARS menace, President Muhammadu Buhari has finally stated his stance saying the disbanding of SARS is only a first step his administration is taking to nip the excesses of the security agents in the bud.
This was contained in a footage released on his verified twitter handle (@MBuhari), where he condemned the excessive use of force as well as the cases of extrajudicial killings by some men of the police force.
He further reiterated that his administration is committed to the extensive police reforms and to ensure that the responsibility of the police and every other security agencies remain focused on their primary purpose of establishment, which is to protect lives and property of Nigerians.
The President while condoling with the family of one of the victims of the brutality killed in Ogbomosho, Oyo state, has given a directive for a thorough investigation into the circumstance of his death and promised that the bad eggs in the police force shall be brought to book
Meanwhile, President Buhari seized the opportunity to recognize the hard-work and diligence of the majority of the police officers in their duty and therefore urged them not to allow the few bad eggs to tarnish the reputation and image of the force.
It would be recalled that, there has been a continuous protest led majorly by the Nigerian youths in many parts of the country and also outside country, with many stakeholders within the and outside the country calling for the President to hearken to the voice of Nigerians. This agitation got to a boiling point yesterday with the Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Adamu dissolving the SARS, leaving some people dissatisfied and suspicious of the police and government.
Daylight Reporters gathered that despite the disbanding yesterday, the protests have continued today in many parts of the country, with arrests, beating, harassment, brutality of protesters by the police have become the order of the day. It was also gathered that some protesters were killed and others injured specifically at Ojuelegba and Surulere in Lagos, Ajuwon area of Ogun States among many others.
