Edo To Organise Governor’s Cup Competition For Young Talents

The Edo State government is set to organise its maiden Governor’s Cup Competition as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots sports and talent identification under its Catch-Them-Young initiative.
The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission (ESSC), Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, who disclosed this in Benin City during a strategic meeting with key stakeholders said the competition will take place from April 28 to May 14, 2025.
Hon. Enabulele emphasised that the initiative is a key project of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration, reflecting the governor’s commitment to maintaining Edo’s position as a leading sports hub in Nigeria.
“This tournament is essential for sustaining Edo’s reputation as a sports powerhouse. Through the Governor’s Cup competition, we aim to identify and nurture young talents who would go on to represent the state at national and international levels,” Enabulele stated.
He further commended Governor Okpebholo for his unwavering support for sports development, noting that the competition would serve as a springboard for future sports champions from Edo State.
According to Hon. Enabulele, the School Sports Foundation would oversee the organisation of the event, while Peculiar Ultimate Concerns Ltd. would serve as the sponsor. The ESSC, Ministry of Education, and other relevant stakeholders to collaborate to ensure its success.
Participation in the Governor’s Cup Competition is open to Under-16 students from JSS 1, JSS 2, SS1, and SS2 in public and selected private schools.
Schools’ Game Masters will coordinate the early rounds before the zonal eliminations, which are scheduled to take place from March 10 to 14, 2025.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, represented by the Director of School Support Services, Mr Ikoghode Abudukadiri, expressed strong support for the initiative, emphasising its potential to nurture future champions and further enhance sports development in the state.
