The Edo State Government has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining to curb environmental degradation and ensure economic benefits to the state
In collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, officials inspected two illegal mining sites in Erhua, near Ehor, in Uhonwonde and Iruekpen in Esan West local government areas of the state. Both sites were sealed off for operating without licenses and disregarding environmental regulations.
The inspection, led by Edo State Commissioner for Mining, Hon. Andrew Ijegbai, revealed severe environmental damage. At Erhua, illegal miners excavated dangerously close to a federal road and high-tension power lines, posing serious risks to residents. At Iruekpen, the miners operated without licenses, official consent, or an environmental impact assessment.
Hon. Ijegbai condemned the activities, sayng: “These operations not only degrade the environment but also endanger lives and threaten the state’s power infrastructure.”
He reaffirmed Governor Monday Okpebholo’s commitment to eradicating illegal mining and enforcing sustainable practices. “The impact of illegal mining cannot be overstated. We will work with federal authorities to stop these activities and promote responsible mining,” he said.
The Commissioner who emphasised the government’s focus on environmental protection and sustainable economic growth said the effort is toward enforcing mining regulations.
The inspection team included Engr. Ganiyu Wasiu Ajibade, Zonal Mines Officer (South-South), Mr. Eugene Okoloise, Chairman, Edo State Taskforce on Protection of Government Property, and Mr. Omoruyi Ihianle, Director of Mining, Edo State Ministry of Mining.
