The Cross River State Government has officially handed over 20 hectares of land to the Federal Housing Authority and Urban Development for the development of the Renewed Hope Housing Scheme.
The Initiative, which aims to bridge the housing gap in the country, is targeted at low and middle-income earners, ensuring they have access to decent and affordable homes.
Speaking during the handover, leader of the visiting team overseeing the project, Surveyor Pamela Ibikunle, explained that, their primary objective was to assess the site, establish boundary beacons, and conduct a comprehensive survey to aid the planners in understanding the terrain.
Ibikunle emphasised that proper mapping and technical evaluations were crucial to the success of the project, as they would help in designing a housing layout that aligns with the area’s topography and infrastructure needs.
Receiving the delegation, the State Commissioner for Housing, Dr (Mrs.) Beatrice Igwe, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr Ignatius Egere, commended the federal government’s collaboration with state governments to address the nation’s housing deficit.
Igwe, who noted that housing remained a key component of human development, said the Renewed Hope Housing Scheme would not only provide shelter, but also create employment opportunities through construction and associated industries.
She described the Renewed Hope Housing Scheme as a symbol of strong partnership, assuring that the Cross River State Ministry of Housing would provide full support to ensure the successful takeoff and implementation of the project.
“The state government is committed to working closely with all stakeholders to facilitate a smooth execution of the scheme, ensuring that the homes are delivered on schedule and meeting the highest standards of quality and sustainability,” he assured.
The commissioner stated that the housing project is also expected to have a ripple effect on the local economy, as it would lead to increased demand for building materials, skilled labour, and other essential services.
“By providing affordable housing, the government is not only improving living conditions but also stimulating economic growth, urban development, and social stability in the state.
“The initiative aligns with broader efforts to decongest overcrowded urban areas and promote planned residential communities that offer essential amenities and a better quality of life,” Igwe noted.
The event, which witnessed inspection of the project site, marked the official commencement of activities for the much-anticipated housing initiative.
