Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) experts have tasked the Bauchi State Water and Sewage Corporation (BSWSC) on maintenance and timely repair of broken water pipes in order to avoid the flow of unhygienic water in taps which can concomitantly cause water borne diseases to consumers.
They made the call in a live program on recurrent cholera outbreaks in the state at the Bauchi State Television (BATV) organized by WaterAid and monitored by our correspondent.
One of the discussants Dr Rilwanu Mohammed who is executive chairman of the state primary healthcare development agency attributed recurrent cholera outbreaks in the state especially in the capital to floods and poor hygiene.
Rilwanu uncovered that about 260 people were reported to have contracted cholera this year adding that the rapid response by the agency prevented further spread of the disease.
He said none of the affected persons died of the disease.
According to him, the agency sanitized 5, 000 wells in the metropolis with chlorine with a view to disinfecting them.
He called on businessmen to construct commercial public toilets at markets and motorparks so as to stop open defecation and urination that cause cholera and other infections.
