Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has inaugurated six developmental projects in two local government areas as part of his ongoing projects’ commissioning tour in the southern part of the state.
This includes the commissioning of two projects in Biu Local Government Area on Thursday, with Zulum spending the night in Kwaya-Kusar Local Government Area before continuing the tour.
Among the key projects unveiled was a 60-classroom Islamic college designed to counter violent extremism and prevent young people from being radicalised by terrorist groups.
The project reflects the state government’s focus on integrating formal education into the traditional almajiri system.
Governor Mohammed Inuwa of Gombe State joined Zulum to symbolically cut the ribbon at the High Islamic College.
In his address, Zulum emphasised his administration’s efforts to reform the Tsangaya education system, a traditional Islamic learning method.
“We aim to preserve the essence of Tsangaya while integrating modern educational practices to equip our children with the skills they need to thrive in today’s world,” he stated.
The Governor also pledged to establish higher Islamic colleges in each of Borno’s 27 local governments to ensure that no child is left behind.
Additionally, Zulum distributed bicycles to students from remote villages to ease their transportation to school.
Other projects commissioned included 10 units of two-bedroom bungalows for teachers, an ICT center in Briyel, and two government lodges in Kwaya-Kusar and Bayo local governments.
Zulum also inaugurated a comprehensive primary healthcare center in Fikayel, Bayo Local Government Area, further enhancing healthcare access in the area.
The governor reaffirmed his commitment to improving teachers’ living conditions and directed the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation to prioritise the rehabilitation and construction of new staff quarters in the 2025 budget.
