An All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Plateau House Assembly, Mr Mark Sunday, has called for creation of a bypass for articulated vehicles to check incessant accidents in Jos city centre.
Mark who is vying to represent the people of Jos North West State Constituency, made the call on Sunday in Jos, while interacting with newsmen.
The APC candidate said that accidents by the heavy duty trucks had become a common occurrence in Jos, especially around Polo Roundabout in Gadabiu.
“In less than a month we’ve had about two fatal accidents in this area.
“The first one, even though no life was lost, the truck missed control and destroyed several shops.
“The latest one that occurred on Wednesday night was a fully loaded fuel tanker that lost control, fell and went into flames claiming the lives of the driver and his assistant.
“Scores of people would have been killed if the accident occurred in the day time.
“However, invaluable property, including University of Jos Veterinary Teaching Hospital, were razed as a result of the fire that emanated from the accident.
“I am calling on Plateau government to create a bypass specifically for the articulated vehicles.
“Before the creation of a bypass, the movement of such should vehicles should be regulated in the metropolis as it is done in other states to save lives and properties,” he advised.
Mark further advised that such vehicles should be allowed to ply the roads in the city only at nights.
The APC candidate commended Gov. Simon Lalong for visiting the scene to have an on the spot assessment of the situation.
He said that the governor and the government had the capacity to create the bypass before the expiration of his tenure.
He commiserated with those who lost their property in the inferno.
He called on the people area, particularly the youth to be patient, assuring them that he and his team would reach out to government with a view to finding a lasting solution to the problem.
Mark also called on all leaders from the area to lend their voices to ensure that the problem is solved.
