The Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), in Taraba State, says it has commenced investigations into alleged cases of diversion of palliatives distributed to the16 LGAs across the state.
The state ALGON chairman, Hassan Jauro, said this on Sunday in a phone call with DAYLIGHTREPORTERS.
The state government recently released items provided to the state by the federal government which includes bags of rice, maize, guinea corn and fertilisers to the local government areas through ALGON.
Mr Jauro was reacting to public outcry that some of the assorted grains were allegedly diverted and sold in the markets while other items were also alleged to have been sold to dealers from neighbouring states.
He said that “these are mere allegations against members of the committee saddled with the release and distribution of the grains without any reasonable evidence.
He said he was shocked and surprised when he learned of such cases considering the caliber of persons that were saddled with the responsibility for the distribution at all levels.
“In each of the local government areas there are committees headed by the local government chairman, the DPOs, DSS, religious leaders, women leaders, youth leaders, traditional rulers and even political stakeholders are members of the committee, I was shocked and surprised when I was told that the grains were being sold to the public” he said
He said the aim was to ensure transparency and accountability in the distribution of the grains as directed by Governor Agbu Kefas.
“I have assigned some persons to investigate the allegations and come out with concrete evidence, I am assuring you that anyone involved no matter how mighty will be investigated and prosecuted,” Jauro said.
He also appealed to the public especially, Civil Society Organizations and Non-Governmental Organizations to report such cases to security agencies.
DAYLIGHTREPORTERS learnt that each of the local government areas got over 250 bags of the assorted grains.
