By Dennis Udoma, Uyo
The Akwa Ibom State All Progressives Party, APC, and the People’s Democratic Party are in war – of – words over former governorship candidate of the Young Progressive Party’s defection, Senator Bassey Albert Akpan into APC last weekend at Essien Udim Local Government of the state.
APC State Publicity Secretary, Barrister Oto-Abasi Udo, who reacted to the PDP’s statement credited to it’s State Publicity Secretary, Borono Bassey said, “there is serious lamentation in the camp of the ruling party, which once prides itself as a religion.
He said, PDP is now a drowned party grappling for what to hold unto. He queried; how true is what he said?
“What I can say is that, PDP Publicity Secretary is saying the opposite; PDP is the party that is drowned.
“Senator Bassey Albert is Akpabio’s political godson; an ally who has good electoral value and what I can say is that, PDP has itself to blame. With a politician like Senator Albert defecting with others, APC is closing in on the PDP”.
Another stakeholder who spoke under anonymity said, APC has won a soul into it’s fold in the person of Senator Bassey Albert Akpan stating that, this particular defection would worry the PDP for a long time.
“They may not accept it openly but, my friends in PDP are lamenting seriously and we can see their frustrations going forward.
But the State Publicity Secretary of PDP, Mr Boronno Bassey yesterday, described the defection of Senator Albert and his supporters into APC as a movement to oblivion saying, Akpan’s action is an indication of a person who is drowned.
“Senator Akpan’s defection to APC is like a man jumping from a lake into ocean .We sympathize with him not just sympathy but his new political oblivion which he had launched himself to . As a political party , PDP is solid and has always been solid in Akwa Ibom .
The PDP Publicity Secretary in the state however disclosed that, he has observed the hasty attitude of the defectors who are agitating for power in 2027 adding that, such desperation portrays selfishness instead of talking about development of the state.
” We have seen all these in the past, we have seen those who defected to mushroom political parties with the hope that their smaller party will capture Akwa Ibom state but it didn’t happen.
” We commend Akwa people so much because they are politically enlightened. They know the people who are statesmen and also know people who are out to pursue their selfish interest .
” If you listened to the conversation trailing all these issues of defection , nobody is talking about development of the state . They are talking about how to get the power which is not what to be talked about now as 2027 is still far “
Bassey maintained that, PDP has witnessed several still born coalition and promised that the latest one between senator Bassey Albert and the APC will never succeed.
