Akoko Edo Council Backs Fight Against Lassa Fever

The Acting Chairman of Akoko Edo Local Government Area, Rt. Hon. Alabi Bliss Oshionogue, has pledged the council’s support in combating Lassa fever.
He made the commitment while receiving the Council Health Committee Team at the Council Headquarters in Igarra.
He assured that adequate logistics and support would be provided to ensure the success of an upcoming immunization programme, tagged “The Big Catch Up” (BCU), set to begin immediately.
“The well-being of our people is our top priority. Children must access Medicare for healthy growth. We are committed to quality healthcare in line with Governor Monday Okpebholo’s five-point agenda and international best practices,” he stated.
Rt. Hon. Alabi noted that the Edo State Government had taken concrete steps to eradicate Lassa fever and other diseases.
He described Governor Okpebholo as a leader passionate about healthcare.
He also emphasized the Council’s commitment to funding health initiatives.
He urged collaboration with the National Population Commission (NPC) for proper child registration and called for increased advocacy through traditional rulers on food safety to curb Lassa fever.
Deputy Director of Health Education Services, Mr. Ajakaiye Jackson, said the Committee’s visit was to seek and enlist his support in fighting the Lassa fever scourge.
State Technical Facilitator (STF) for Health Education Services, Pastor Odutola Abiodun, explained that the programme is backed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF.
He requested security support to ensure health workers reach remote areas safely.
He also called for sensitization and logistical aid to support supervision efforts.
