The National Population Commission (NPC) has lauded Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, for his support to the ongoing Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) embarked upon by the commission in the state.
Addressing journalists, the NPC Federal Commissioner in charge of Gombe State, Abubakar Danburam, said this initiative aims to ensure the registration of children at birth, issuance of birth certificates, and recording of deaths and issuance of death certificates.
According to him, the governor’s support led to an advocacy tour by the commission across the state, sensitising local governments and emirates on the importance of registering births and deaths.
He also hailed the Emir of Gombe, Abubakar Shehu Abubakar for his continuous support for the National Population Commission’s mandate, urging the people of Gombe State the take birth and death registration seriously.
Danburam noted that the birth registration has positive impact on the state and national development, ‘as accurate population data will inform planning and decision-making’.
However, the NPC commissioner said people do not care to register deaths but stressed that death registration is crucial in helping the country understands the causes of mortality, which can inform government’s planning and disease prevention strategies.
He said by analysing death registration data, the government can identify patterns and trends in mortality rates, enabling targeted interventions to reduce preventable deaths.
