EFCC Arrests Top Edo Official For Alleged Naira Abuse

Operatives of the Benin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested Kelly Okungbowa, also known as Ebo Stone, for allegedly abusing naira.
Okungbowa, a recently suspended Edo State government official, was taken into custody on Monday, March 17, 2025.
Until his suspension by Governor Monday Okpebholo, he served as the Coordinator of the Edo State Public Safety Response Team (PSRT). His suspension followed allegations of extortion, harassment, and unruly behaviour.
Okungbowa’s arrest came after a viral video showed him spraying and mutilating naira notes at a bar in Benin City on March 9, 2025.
Reports indicate he was seen throwing money on two exotic dancers in full view of onlookers.
Dele Oyewale, EFCC’s Head of Media & Publicity, confirmed the arrest in a statement.
Following the development, the Edo State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) commended the EFCC for its swift action.
Chris Osa Nehikhare, Publicity Secretary of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, called for a thorough investigation and diligent prosecution.
“The swift arrest of Okungbowa, who was seen in a viral video spraying and mutilating the naira, sends a strong message that such criminal and irresponsible actions will not be tolerated, regardless of the perpetrator’s position or influence,” Nehikhare said.
He urged the EFCC to ensure that the case is handled in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act of 2007, which criminalises naira abuse, including spraying, stepping on, or mishandling the currency.
The EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing currency regulations and ensuring compliance with financial laws.
Okungbowa remains in custody and will be charged to court once investigations are completed.
