By Joe Goddy, Katsina
Katsina State Governor Umaru Dikko Radda has launched an empowerment programme with disbursement of food and cash to 7,220 widows across the 34 local government areas (LGAs) of the state.
Speaking at the exercise, the governor described the initiative as a significant milestone in his administration’s commitment to enhancing the well-being of vulnerable women, particularly widows.
He stated that 840 widows from four LGAs—Batagarawa, Katsina, Rimi, and Kaita—were set to receive a 25kg bag of rice and cash support as part of the Ramadan gift package.
Governor Radda reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting women and the most vulnerable in society, urging the beneficiaries not to sell the rice but to use it for their sustenance.
Addressing criticism of his administration’s policies, he emphasised that his government remained dedicated to improving the lives of the less privileged while continuing to execute capital projects for the state’s development.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Sheikh Isah Dubai, thanked the governor for the kind gesture, noting that it aligns with Islamic teachings on caring for the needy.
He also commended the Community Development Programme (CDP) for its role in selecting the beneficiaries.
He further explained that 20 widows were selected from each ward across the 34 councils, emphasising that feeding the vulnerable is a practice with multiple blessings in Islam.
