Jubilation in Akwa Ibom as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the establishment of Southern Atlantic University for the state.
The nod by President Tinubu followed the Federal Executive Council Meeting on Wednesday March 3, 2025, which gave credibility to the institution’s premiere status as the first ever private University to be established in Ibibio land, comprising Uyo and Eket Senatorial Districts of the State.
Prof. Alfred Ita, from the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State could not hide his excitement, describing it as a welcome development.
According to him, “I am excited about it as a person and as a son of Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.
“It is a welcome development. I appreciate it and President Bola Tinubu for his love by extending such magnanimity to Mkpat Enin where we come from”.
Also, Mr Raphael Effiong, an educationist said, “The founder has made us proud, for putting Ibibio land on the educational map and planning, adding that Ibibio would remain grateful to Mr President.
“We thank President Tinubu for approving the University for the State.
“Southern Atlantic University will be the first private University in Ibibio land in Akwa Ibom State.
“I commend the founder of Southern Atlantic University, Uyo, Pastor Brassey James, for his doggedness and resilience in pursuing its timely approval by the federal government.
“This would help to expand the horizon for learning, character reformation and excellence in learning by students as they pass through the institution”.
It would be recalled that, Southern Atlantic University is among the 11 additional private universities in the country endorsed by the federal government.
The move is inline with government effort in opening up more space for the private sector participation in democratising education for all.
