Market women under the Ikpoba Hill Market Women Association (IMWA) staged a protest in Benin City on Monday over the killing of 38-year-old Success Izekor by her husband, Kelvin Izekor.
Speaking to journalists, Mrs Odion Asemota revealed that Success was stabbed in the neck while lying on her bed and died along with her four-month pregnancy. Asemota, a fellow trader, described the deceased as peaceful and vowed that the market women would not allow her death to be ignored.
She alleged that the suspect’s mother had been boasting about securing her son’s release, prompting the market women to demand justice.
Success’s elder sister, Mrs Ugiagbe Iziegbe, further alleged that her late sister had endured constant physical abuse from her husband. She called on the federal and state governments to ensure justice is served.
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that Kelvin Izekor was nearly lynched by an irate mob before police intervened.
Police spokesperson Moses Yamu stated that operatives responded swiftly to a distress call on February 22, 2025, at 10 pm and found Success’s lifeless body in a pool of blood with deep cuts in her head, adding that the suspect was taken into custody for investigation while the victim was rushed to the hospital, where she was confirmed dead.
The tragic incident has sparked public outrage, with calls for authorities to take decisive action against domestic violence.
