Jigawa NMA Endorses Establishment Of Fed Medical Centre Hadejia

Jigawa state Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has thrown its weight behind the bill before the Senate for the Establishment of a federal medical centre (FMC) in Hadejia.
This was contained in a statement signed by the association’s spokesman, Dr Shamsu Gujungu.
Dr Shamsu Gujungu who is the Publicity Secretary of the NMA in Jigawa State and Chairman of the NMA Kidney Action Committee delivered a compelling address before the Senate during the two days public hearing in Abuja, emphasised the urgent need for a federal medical centre in Hadejia.
The Bill was initiated and sponsored by the Distinguished Senator, Representing Jigawa Northeast Constituency, Ambassador Abdulhameed Ahmad Malam Madori.
Highlighting the overwhelming healthcare burden in the Northeast Senatorial Zone of Jigawa state where Hadejia General Hospital, built in the late 1960’s and managed by few medical officers without consultants, remains the only major secondary centre for the region and neighboring parts of Yobe State.
According to him, the proposed for the siting of FMC Hadejia is timely and a welcome development as it would address the healthcare divide, in combating the rising chronic diseases bedevilling Hadejia vicinity and beyond.
Apart from equipping the centre with professional consultant’s and enough medication and teaching facilities in offering special health medical treatments with high skilled professors among other qualify medical doctors, the centre when establish will serve as a research hub, the statement said.
During the presentations, both members of the Association headed by the Chairman, Dr Abdulbaseed Umar, and Dr Muhammad Kasim (Chairman, Young Doctors Forum) lauded the initiative, stressing the establishment of FMC Hadejia is a matter of urgency, not just a necessity as its establishment is expected to render effective medical care service delivery to the larger populace.
In submitting a detailed memorandum to the senate committee on Health, the
NMA, emphasised that Hadejia has the highest burden of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in Nigeria, yet lacks a tertiary facility to provide nephrology care, research and advanced medical interventions.
The statement further noted that Jigawa State Government has committed to leasing a newly built hospital structure in Hadejia (which was originally planned as a specialist hospital) to be used as FMC Hadejia, thereby removing infrastructural barriers for the federal government, and making the hospital ready for immediate adoption.
In their collective remarks, the NMA Jigawa delegation thanked the distinguished Senator for his foresight and for prioritising the health of Jigawa people, calling on the
Senate to expedite the passage of the bill, and stressing that with ready-to-use
infrastructure in place, the project is no longer about “how” but “when” it will take
off.
NMA also expressed gratitude to the Senate for its commitment to improving
healthcare across Nigeria and pledged full support in ensuring the realisation of this viable projects for its full fledged reality.
