Gunmen Kill Two Farmers In Okpekpe, Edo

Unknown gunmen have killed two local farmers, Philip Batemue (also known as Ebo) and Christopher Bello, in Okpekpe, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.
The traditional ruler of Okpekpe, HRH Peter Osigbemeh, confirmed the attack in a telephone interview with journalists in Benin City. He stated that security operatives had been deployed to the community to prevent further violence and maintain order.
Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of Etsako East Local Government Council, Benedicta Attoh, raised concerns over the increasing attacks in the North Ibie Zone.
In a statement issued through her Chief Press Secretary, Benjamin Atu, he warned that if urgent security measures are not taken, the community could face more bloodshed.
“It is time to tackle this high level of insecurity by deploying the military to patrol the bushes and farmlands, ensuring that farmers can work without fear,” she said.
Attoh also called on Governor Monday Okpebholo to strengthen security across the area, particularly in remote communities, and reactivate the local vigilante network, which had previously helped to curb crime.
The Edo State Police Command spokesman, CSP Moses Yamu, said he would provide an update on the situation.
Meanwhile, the Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the killings.
In a statement, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Chris Nehikhare, criticized Governor Okpebholo, accusing him of failing in his primary duty as the state’s Chief Security Officer.
The PDP expressed disappointment that while insecurity escalates, Okpebholo has been preoccupied with celebrating his 100 days in office. The party alleged that his administration had dismantled security structures set up by former Governor Godwin Obaseki, including surveillance systems and a robust vigilante network, leading to a rise in violent attacks.
“The governor must wake up from his slumber and take urgent, decisive steps to secure the state before the situation spirals completely out of control,” the party charged.
The killings have heightened tensions in the area, with residents calling for immediate government intervention to restore peace and security.
