Professor Lassa Calls For New Constitution By The People

A former Executive Secretary of the National Commission of Colleges of Education (NCCE), Professor Peter Lassa, has called for a need for a new Nigeria constitution that comes from the people
He said the 1999 Constitution as amended has not given Nigerians the government that meets their aspiration
Speaking at a press conference in Jos on Monday he said the 1999 Constitution as amended has given the country a terrible leadership.
He said the 1999 Constitution has given the people unimaginable poverty, gave room for breeding insecurity with keep new sects raising their heads, Boko Haram, bandits, unknown gunmen Fulani herders and Lakurawa and others.
According to Professor Lassa, the educational system has been degraded especially with staggering number of out of school children.
He said the present constitution has constantly aided corruption as the system has been rigged to produce the worse of the worst.
“We need a referendum where everyone’s voice will be heard, we are all Nigerians and no one should be more Nigerian than the other,” he said.
He said the 1999 Constitution which the country operate today came in to being by Decree 24 promulgated in to law by then Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar.
According to him, the present constitution with several amendment has created confusion than correcting some lapses.
