Edo Govt Alert On Blocked Drainages, Flooding
By Osehobo Ofure, Benin
The dangers posed by blocked drainages to the free flow of erosion and the risk of potential flooding in Benin City, the Edo State capital, have been highlighted.
Executive Secretary of the Edo State Emergency Management Agency (EdoSEMA), Hon. Jerry Idahosa, raised the alarm during an on-the-spot assessment of blocked drainages in parts of the city.
According to Hon. Idahosa, the assessment was prompted by reports of drainage blockages in various areas, which pose a significant risk of flooding if not addressed urgently.
He emphasized the need for immediate intervention to prevent environmental hazards that could impact residents and businesses.
“Our mandate is to ensure the safety of lives and property, and this assessment allows us to take swift action to mitigate the risks associated with flooding. We urge residents to support government efforts by properly disposing of waste and avoiding activities that contribute to drainage blockage,” he stated.
As part of the immediate response, the Executive Secretary has called on relevant ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), including the Ministry of Environment and the Edo State Flood, Erosion, and Watershed Management Agency (EdoFEWMA), to intervene swiftly and clear the blocked drainages to avert any risk of flooding.
The Edo State Government, through SEMA, has reiterated its commitment to disaster prevention and response, assuring residents that necessary measures will be taken to clear drainages and enhance the area’s flood resilience.
This assessment is part of the government’s broader strategy to promote environmental sustainability and protect communities from climate-related disasters.
