CSO Coalition Tasks FG On Niger Delta Roads, LG Autonomy, Others

Coalition of Civil Societies in Nigeria (CCSON), has urged the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency dualise all federal highways in the Niger Delta region, especially the Calabar-Itu Highway; Port Harcourt-Eleme-Ikot Abasi Highway; Ikot Ekpene-Aba-Umuahia and Abak- Ikot Abasi Highway to ease movement and transportation of goods and services in the region.
The group gave the charge at a press conference in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital
It said these roads are in deplorable state, and called for their reconstruction.
Otuekong Franklyn Isong, who spoke on behalf of the national coordinator of CCSON used the occasion to commend the Inspector-General of Police and heads of other security agencies in the country for their concerted efforts for at ensuring a peaceful and secure Nigeria during the Christmas m and new year celebrations, and enjoined them to sustain the tempo.
On the Local Government Autonomy, the rights groups lauded President Bola Tinubu for the financial autonomy granted the 774 Local Government Councils in Nigeria by the Apex Court judgment last year through the effort of his administration, and urged Tinubu administration to effectively and adequately implement the Supreme Court ruling in the interest of the grassroots governance and development of Nigerian State.
CCSON also called on the Chairmen of the 774 Local Government Councils in Nigeria to reciprocate the good gesture of the federal government by justifying judicious use of funds in their coffers on people-oriented programmes/projects in their councils and be accountable to their grassroots.
On the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, CCSON charged the 36 Governors to restructure and strengthen governance in their states by the realignment of their administrations with evolving priorities and introducing fresh perspectives into leadership in order to enhance governance, improve service delivery, and ensure that, qualified individuals occupy key and sensitive positions in their states amongst others.
