The Bauchi State Commissioner of Natural Resources Development, Muhammad Maiwada Bello, has described his principal Governor Bala Mohammed’s criticism of the federal government’s economic policies as a bold advocacy for the liberation of the marginalised citizens especially in northern Nigeria.
Speaking to newsmen in Bauchi, Bello defended the governor’s recent criticism of Tinubu’s tax reforms that generated uproar, stating that the governor’s remarks reflect his genuine concerns for the people.
“The governor has always been a voice for the voiceless, and his recent comments about the federal government’s policies are consistent with his commitment to the welfare of Nigerians, particularly in the North,” Bello said.
Governor Mohammed recently sparked national conversation during a meeting with Sheikh Sani Jingir, National Chairman of the Council of Ulama Jama’atu Izalatul Bid’ah Wa’Ikamatis Sunnah where he expressed dissatisfaction with the federal government’s handling of economic reforms, particularly tax policies that he said disproportionately affect northern states.
Quoting the Governor, Bello explained, “Governor Bala Mohammed noted that the North’s fragile economic base, which heavily relies on federal allocations, makes it particularly vulnerable to the new tax reforms.
“He stated that these policies are putting both the region and Nigerians at large under undue strain,” he said.
Bello reiterated the governor’s concerns that the reforms lack consideration for the realities of ordinary Nigerians.
“The governor has always prioritized fairness and equity in governance. He believes that no region or group should be unfairly burdened by policies that do not account for the economic disparities across the country,” Bello stated.
