Zamfara 2027: Prepare For Handover – Group Tells Gov. Dauda
By Juliet Vincent
A prominent socio-political group in Zamfara State, Network For Better Zamfara (NETFOZAM), has issued a strong message to Governor Dauda Lawal, urging him to prepare to hand over the reins of leadership in 2027.
The group, led by Comrade Sani Bala made this declaration during a press briefing in Gusau, following former Governor Bello Matawalle’s recent visit to the state.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Sani described Matawalle’s visit as a significant political development and a signal of renewed hope for the people of Zamfara, especially in fight against banditry and kidnapping.
He accused the current administration of failing to address the critical issues of insecurity, unemployment, and infrastructural decay, which he claimed have worsened since Governor Lawal assumed office.
Matawalle’s visit to Zamfara State, the first since he left office in 2023, has reignited political discourse in the state.
The former governor, now the Minister of State for Defence, was warmly received by his supporters, who see him as a beacon of hope for the state’s future, particularly in his efforts to improve the security in the state.
During his visit, Matawalle reportedly held closed-door meetings with key stakeholders, traditional rulers, and community leaders, which many interpret as part of his groundwork to rescue the state.
He reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s determination to end insecurity and hardship in Zamfara with various interventions.
Reacting to the visit, Comrade Sani said, “Matawalle’s presence has reminded the people of Zamfara of what leadership should look like. The current administration has failed to deliver on its promises, and it is only fair that Governor Dauda Lawal prepares to step aside in 2027 to pave the way for competent leadership and he promised their unflinching support for President Tinubu.”
He did not mince words in their criticism of the current administration.
He accused Governor Lawal of running a government characterised by misplaced priorities, lack of transparency, and poor performance.
“Zamfara is plagued by insecurity, poverty, and a lack of development. Rather than addressing these challenges, the government is busy playing politics and blaming its predecessors. This is unacceptable,” Sani stated.
He further called on Governor Lawal to publish a detailed account of his administration’s achievements in the last 18 months, insisting that Zamfara’s youth deserve transparency and accountability.
The group emphasised the importance of youth participation in governance and decision-making, urging young people in Zamfara to rise and demand better leadership.
“Our future is at stake. We cannot sit back and watch as the state continues to deteriorate under poor leadership. The youth must stand united and advocate for a government that prioritises their welfare and the development of Zamfara,” Sani said.
He also called on the youth to support leaders with a proven track record of competence and dedication to the people, hinting at the possibility of rallying behind Matawalle in 2027.
Although the Zamfara State Government has not officially responded to the group’s statement, sources within Governor Lawal’s administration dismissed the criticisms as politically motivated.
A senior government official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said, “Governor Lawal remains focused on delivering his campaign promises. The allegations by Musa Yandoton and his group are baseless and an attempt to distract the government from its developmental agenda.”
As the countdown to the 2027 general elections begins, Zamfara’s political landscape is heating up. Analysts believe Matawalle’s recent visit and the growing dissatisfaction with the current administration could set the stage for a fierce contest.
The youth has already declared its intent to mobilise support for credible leadership in the next election, vowing to ensure that the voices of Zamfara’s youth are heard.
“We are determined to see a better Zamfara in 2027. This administration has failed us, and we will not allow mediocrity to continue. It’s time for change,” Sani concluded.
The statement by the youths has added to the growing criticism of Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration, setting the tone for what promises to be an intense political battle in the lead-up to 2027. With Matawalle positioning himself as a potential challenger and youth groups like Sani’s calling for accountability, the pressure is mounting on the current administration to deliver results or risk being voted out.
The coming months will be crucial for Governor Lawal as he navigates the political minefield and attempts to regain the trust of the people amidst increasing opposition.
