The Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has called for the strengthening of public institutions, especially those regulating standards and procedures.
He made the call at his office in Abuja on Tuesday, when the Governing Council of the Chartered Institute of Project Managers of Nigeria (CIPMN) presented him an Honorary Fellowship Award of the institute.
Speaker Abbas who attributed the collapse of buildings and infrastructure in various parts of the country to the failure of bodies saddled with the responsibility of ensuring quality assurance.
He stated that with his induction into the CIPMN, he would join the campaign for proper projects execution and management in the country.
He said: “Your institute is indeed very strategic. If only we – Nigerians – would allow it to work the way it should, so many things could be corrected. We hear of collapse of bridges, houses, and all kinds of things in Nigeria. I believe it is because the institutions that are supposed to oversee those areas are not given the enabling environment to operate.
“I think with my induction into this important institute, I will be one of the ambassadors for this institute to be allowed to do its work, which at the end of the day will take Nigeria to a greater level.
“Project management, as highlighted by the President (of the CIPMN), is a critical area, and I believe many members of the House will start to benefit if we have a partnership.”
The Speaker, who said, “today is a day of elation for me and for the House, for such a recognition accorded to us, for our contribution so far in our quest for nation-building,” added, “I want to inform you that I am fully inducted into the institute.”
He added that with the responsibility of being a monitor, mobiliser, enforcer of the laws guiding project managers, “for all these things, I would like to assure you I have accepted we will together build a united Nigeria where rules and regulations will be our watchword.”
The President and Chairman of the Governing Council of the CIPMN, Dr. Jamilu Isa Yankwashi, who led the delegation, earlier hailed Speaker Abbas’ leadership style and contributions to the development of the country.
He said since emergence as the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen has distinguished himself and demonstrated his unwavering commitment to nation-building, describing the Speaker as a patriotic leader.
