The Plateau State Police Command has stated that the alleged bomb explosion reported earlier Tuesday on Ahmadu Bello Way, near the old Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) fence in Jos, was a false alarm.
Alfred Alabo, the police spokesperson, shared this update in a statement issued to journalists on Tuesday.
He noted that the police received a report at approximately 8:20 am, regarding a suspicious shallow dug hole, in the area popularly called Terminus, which led to concerns about a potential Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and sparked panic among local residents.
In response to the alert, Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina promptly dispatched the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team along with the Metro Area Commander and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of “C” Division to investigate the situation.
The team swiftly cordoned off the area to ensure public safety as they carried out a detailed examination of the site.
Following a thorough inspection, the bomb disposal experts concluded that the hole posed no danger and was devoid of any explosive materials.
The area has since been declared safe, alleviating concerns for public safety.
In his statement, Alabo referenced the early morning alert, underscoring that the police swiftly mobilized to address the perceived threat.
“On arrival, the area was immediately secured, and our EOD team began their examination. Ultimately, the hole was found to be safe and free from explosives,” the statement read.
The Commissioner of Police, accompanied by other senior officers, visited the scene for firsthand assessment, confirming that the situation was under control.
During the visit, Commissioner Adesina praised the residents of Plateau State for their vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement throughout the incident.
He reassured the public that there was no reason for alarm and encouraged them to continue their daily routines without fear.
He also stressed the importance of vigilance and urged residents to report any suspicious activity.
