Former Green Eagles Goalkeeper, Peter ‘The Flying Cat’ Fregene Dies at 77

One of Nigeria’s foremost football goalkeepers, Peter Fregene, has died on Sunday after a protracted illness. He was 77 years.
Born in Sapele on May 17, 1947 in present day Delta State, late Fregene was known as “The flying cat” during his playing days.
He played club football for Lagos rivals ECN and Stationery Stores F.C. during a career that spanned the 1960s, 1970s and ECN later known as NEPA, Lagos between 1978 and 1982.
Fregene was the first choice goalkeeper for the Nigeria national football team from 1968 to 1971, before being recalled for the 1982 African Cup of Nations finals.
He represented Nigeria at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City.
