Loved ones are devastated after a female street sweeper was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Jalingo, the Taraba state capital.
The woman identified as Nemis Usman in her early 50s was hit by an unidentified vehicle on the Jalingo-Yola Expressway on Thursday morning.
Mrs Usman, a widow’s body, was found lying dead around 6:am, according to a family source.
Ossie Sunday, a brother to the deceased husband, told PREMIUM TIMES that she left home around 5:30 am for her normal street sweeping job, unfortunately she was found lying dead around 6:am.
He said the incident occurred around Nobis eye clinic in Mile Six area of the expressway.
“An unidentified vehicle I think heading to Yola direction knocked her down; her dead body was only seen in the morning, so we can not ascertain the vehicle type.
“From the impact of the accident it was obvious the driver was at a very high speed.
Mr Sunday said that the deceased had been deposited at the Federal Medical Center (FMC) mortuary in Jalingo.
He said the coordinator of Operation Keep Taraba Clean, Iliya Kefas, visited the accident scene with police authorities and the government has been briefed.
Mr Kefas while speaking with our reporter said, “According to eyewitness reports, the driver of the vehicle, who was on speed, rammed into the woman and zoomed off.”
When contacted, the Spokesperson of Taraba State Police Command, Gambo Kwache, confirmed the accident, saying that, “further updates will be provided.”
