Amnesty Nigeria has faulted the remand of an activist, Umar Danjani-Hadejia, for protesting against hunger in Nigeria.
A chief magistrate’s court in Dutse on Saturday ordered the remand Mr Danjani, who was arrested in the Dute, the capital of Jigawa State, during the #Endbadgovernance protest.
The court gave the order on Friday after his arraignment by the Nigerian Police.
Earlier, one of his lawyers, Sadam Miga, said the magistrate rejected the bail application filed by his counsel and ordered his remand at the Birnin Kudu prison for two weeks.
Reacting to the incident, Amnesty International asked the authorities to immediately release him.
In a statement on its X handle, the global international human rights group reminded the authorities that subjecting critical voices to intimidation and arbitrary acts is unlawful.
“Amnesty International calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Umar Danjani – one of the protesters against hunger, who was hurriedly remanded in Birnin Kudi prison. Subjecting critical voices to intimidation and arbitrary arrests for speaking out is unlawful,” Amnesty said.
