An Upper Area Court sitting in Kasuwan Nama, Jos, on Thursday sentenced a 22-year-old labourer, Francine Laurence, to three years imprisonment for stealing a cell phone worth N34,000.
The Judge, Lawal Suleiman, sentenced Laurence without an option to pay a fine, after he pleaded guilty to stealing the phone.
Suleiman also ordered the convict to pay N30,000 in compensation to the owner of the phone.
Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Insp. Monday Dabit told the court that the case was reported at the Jos North Police station on Sept. 7 by the complainant, Ms Mary Francis.
Dabit said that the convict stole the phone from where Francis was charging it.
The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of Section 271 of the Penal Code law of Plateau.
