A Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), Peace Architecture Dialogue, (PAD), under the auspices of Search for Common Ground have expressed concern over the spate of criminal activities in Taraba state, highlighting ways to address it.
The group lamentation was contained in a Press release issued in Jalingo, on Tuesday, shortly after the NGO’s monthly peace forum with representatives of various groups, institutions and security personnel.
The statement signed by the State PAD Chairman, Joseph Lucas, noted that the increased cases of kidnapping banditry, rape, armed robbery and other vices has left communities vulnerable and devasted.
The PAD stressed the need for collaboration between all agencies, heads, affected communities and government institutions concerned in order to curb the mayhem that has been consuming communities like a wildfire.
“Recent incidents of Kidnapping, banditry, rape, armed robbery etc, have underscored the urgent need for comprehensive and effective measures to ensure the security of our citizens. The rise in crime rates, including the aforementioned incidents has left communities across the state feeling vulnerable and demanding a swift response from the government”
They group highlighted major areas and strategies that should be adopted in order to achieve positive results in the fight against insecurity.
“Provide ongoing training for law enforcement personnel to ensure they are equipped with the latest skills and knowledge needed to address evolving security challenges effectively.
“Launch public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about safety measures and encourage them to report suspicious activities. Building a culture of vigilance and cooperation is crucial in combating insecurity.
“Collaborate with neighboring states and international organizations to share intelligence and best practices in addressing cross-border criminal activities.
“Streamline and strengthen the judicial system to ensure justice is served without interference. This includes addressing case backlogs, improving witness protection programs, and implementing stricter penalties for serious offenses and offenders
“Foster collaboration between law enforcement agencies and local communities to establish trust and open lines of communication. Community policing initiatives through the use of Vigilante and professional hunters to help build a stronger bond between law enforcement and residents” the statement reads.
The group also called on the State and National emergency agencies to collaborate in providing immediate relief to affected communities in order to cushion the effect of the unfortunate incidents.
Mr Lucas also pledged PAD support whenever and however it is needed by the Government in the fight against insecurity.
