…….accuses Gombe United management of embezzlement of funds
Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has expressed dismay over the continued poor performance of the state government’s owned football club, Gombe United FC in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL).
This is even as he accused the management of the football club of embezzlement of funds without commensurate performance.
Speaking during a quarterly media chat with local radio stations in Gombe, the governor threatened to withdraw his support for the club for a private owned Doma United FC.
He lamented that despite the huge amount of money being released to the club on a monthly basis from the coffers of the government, the club lived below expectations.
“Let me give you an example with Gombe United, Gombe United is a state government’s owned club, and since I became the governor, month had never passed without giving the club twelve million naira. But here is Doma United, which also plays in the same category with Gombe United. A single individual is running the club, and government, we never gave them anything, but they are doing very well in the league.
“But because this (Gombe United) is a government owned club, some people have become an external parasite on beef cattle, they are suckling blood without doing what they are expected to do.” He said.
He further added that “as far as I am earnestly, twelve million naira monthly is enough to run the club, but if they can not do the right thing, we will assemble and migrate to Doma United.”
Gombe United have 19 points from 16 matches and are 14th on the NPFL table, while Doma United are 3rd on the table with 29 points from 16 matches.
