How Senator Lau is touching lives in his constituency
By Chuwang Dungs
Shuaibu Lau, Senator representing Taraba North has been a subject of malicious attacks by detractors over the handling of constituency projects he attracted to his district between 2015-2022
Lau, who is serving his second tenure under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), assumed the Senatorial seat after defeating Sani Abubakar of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in court in 2015.
Abubakar was earlier declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) but his victory was upturned by the Appeal Court and the mandate was given to Lau
Lau’s foes have continued to ask him to explain his position on the allegation that he diverted funds meant for street lights and other items meant for empowerment funds of his constituency
Some weeks ago, there was an alarming speculation that the Senator is not impacting on his constituents but investigation by DAYLIGHT REPORTERS shows that the speculations are mere fabrication and false accusation.
To constituents, Lau can hardly be faulted on the execution of the constituency projects. According to them, the businessman turned politician has initiated and completed so many constituency projects in Taraba North District. Although many of the projects have not been fully paid for, the beneficiary communities have been savouring their facilities.
A Community elder, Inuwa Jen who applauded Lau’s contributions to the development of his constituency, said he had offered effective representation.
Many constituents who said they were taken aback by the wilful allegation pointed out that, although senators can facilitate projects, the projects are not executed by them. Project execution is usually the product of long processes, starting with bidding. Most times, the senator may not even know the contractor handling the constituency project. Also, payments are staggered.
Just last Monday in continuation of palliative distribution to vulnerable people, Lau donated foodstuff to persons living with disability (PLWD) and Pensioners across the six local government areas of his constituency.
The Senator who was represented by Gidado Aminu, said the gesture was aimed at cushioning the effects of fuel subsidy removal in the country.
Receiving the items, the representative of the pensioners and people living with disabilities express their gratitude to the Lau and also appreciates his kind of leadership that carried everyone along, regardless of religion, tribe or political affiliations.
They also prayed for the Senator success and Allah guide in governing the affairs of Taraba North and urged other political office holders to emulate the senator by reaching out to people like them in other to give them sense of belonging
Last week Aminu on behalf of the Senator also handed over food packs to the representatives of Yorro, Jalingo, Karim Lamido and Ardo Kola to go and disperse in their respective Local Government on behalf of the Senator.
The distribution will cover all the 6 Local Governments of his senatorial district.
Aminu during the handing over of the palliative explained that the Senator intervention is a means to support his constituents as well as compliment the efforts of the Federal and State governments in easing the challenges being faced at this trying time.
