Security operatives were on red alert in Enugu on Thursday as the State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal delivers judgment on a petition filed on the March 18 governorship election in the state.
The petition was filed by the candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Chijioke Edeoga to challenge INEC’s declaration of Peter Mbah of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the elected governor.
The three-member panel of the tribunal is led by Justice Kudirat Morayo.
Operatives of police’s Rapid Response Squad have been deployed in strategic locations to prevent any potential violent protests.
Nine Toyota Hilux vans, three Armoured Personal Carriers (APCs) were also stationed around the tribunal premises.
About 50 police personnel, soldiers, DSS and NSCDC operatives had also taken their positions around the tribunal’s premises.
Police spokesman in Enugu State, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, told newsmen that the heavy presence of security operatives in the area and in strategic locations in Enugu was routine.
He also said that the move was to ensure safety of all before, during and after the judgment had been delivered.
