The Kano State government says it has bought assorted grains worth about N1.6 billion for onward distribution to residents as part of the palliative measures it is adopting.
The grains included millet, maize and rice.
A statement issued in Kano on Thursday by the Press Secretary to the governor, Bature Tofa, made this known.
Mr Tofa said the state governor, Abba Yusuf, disclosed this shortly before the start of the weekly Executive Council meeting at the Government House in Kano.
The statement said items purchased were in addition to the five trucks of rice donated by the Federal Government to the state, assuring that modalities had already been put in place to ensure that the items reached the vulnerable people in the society.
It however called on the Federal Government to review its palliatives allocation formula to give more to Kano, being the state with the largest population in the country.
The statement said the governor expressed his administration’s displeasure by the hardship people of the state were facing as a result of the removal of fuel subsidy.
It also said Governor Yusuf commended President Bola Tinubu’s initiatives on palliatives, noting that the measure will help cushion the suffering of the people.
It disclosed that the state government was working out a plan towards providing cows, sheep and goats to empower women, especially those in the rural areas for self reliance and economic prosperity.
It said the governor also called on civil servants in the state to be punctual and remain committed to their duties, saying the present administration will not condone malingery and negligence of duty.
According to the statement, the state government will do all it can to improve the welfare of the civil servants.
The statement added, “The governor appreciated the support and cooperation of people of the state to his administration and prayed for the sustenance of the tempo for the overall interest of the people of the state.”
