Not less than 37 schools are currently participating in the Gombe state Inter-Primary Schools Athletics Championship organised by the Gombe State Athletics Association.
The competition has commenced over the weekend at the Pantami Stadium, Gombe with children drawn from schools in Gombe local government area of the state as participants.
Chairman of the Gombe State Athletics Association Ahmed Shuaibu Gara explained that the competition was organised to give primary school pupils opportunity to per take in major sport event and get prizes.
According to him, the event started with girls for 100 meters race at the opening ceremony adding that the boys’ would also be conducted in the four day event.
Other games to be held during the athletic competition he noted included; 50 meters egg and sack races for boys, 200 meters boys and girls semi-finals, 50 meters bottle race for girls and 400 meters bicycle race for the boys respectively.
He expressed gratitude to parents for releasing their wards to participate in the athIetics competitions saying that would enable them to harness their sporting potentials.
“The championship aims to provide a platform for young athletes to showcase their abilities and foster a spirit of healthy competition. Spectators can look forward to witnessing exciting races, jumps and throws as the young athletes strive for excellence in their respective events.
“In addition to the competition itself, the organizers have arranged a training session specifically for media personnel. This training will take place at the Gombe State University enabling journalists to effectively cover and report sports and amplify its significance and impact”. He said.
