The Police arraigned five men on Tuesday before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly belonging to a secret cult.
The defendants, Sanni Mohammed, 19, Fagbehingbe Ayodeji, 20, Ojo Ademola, 27, Fatuki Tosin, 28, and Arowosegbe Okiki, 20, were arraigned on a one-count-charge of belonging to a cult group.
The prosecutor, Insp.Bankole Olasunkanmi, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on Aug.9 in Ikere-Ekiti.
He said that the defendants were arrested by the police during a birthday party where they were all dressed in yellow outfit as a symbol of their membership of a cult group.
Olasunkanmi added that when the police searched one of the apartments of the defendants, they recovered an axe.
He said that the defendant confessed to the police that they were members of Black Axe “Aiye” confraternity.
According to him, the offence contravened Section 4 (i) of Secret Cult Abolition Law 2017.
The prosecutor urged the court to remand the defendants in the Correctional Centre,pending legal advice from the office of Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
The pleas of the defendants were not taken.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Adedayo Oyebanji, ordered the remand of the defendants at the correctional centre, pending issuance of legal advice.
He adjourned the case until Sept.9 for mention.
