Nentawe Yilwatda, Plateau governorship candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), has promised to involve traditional rulers in governance if elected governor of the state.
This is contained in a statement by Shittu Bamayi, the spokesperson for the state APC campaign council.
Bamayi said that Yilwatda said this during a visit to Qua’an Pan Traditional Council in Ba’ap, Qua’an Pan Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.
The governorship candidate stated that under his administration, traditional rulers would participate fully in governance particularly in the area of peace building and security.
He said that as a matter of priority, he plans to initiate a bill for the amendment of the state Peace Building Agency and the state security outfit, Operation Rainbow to accommodate traditional rulers on their boards.
“I have identified some key areas in the constitution to be amended for the involvement of the traditional institution in governance.
“As a revered, respected and a rallying point for both the government and the governed, there is need to clearly spell out the constitutional role of the traditional rulers in the constitution.
“As a result oriented professional, I would work with members of National Assembly from my state to push for the amendment of the constitution to involve traditional rulers in governance,” he added.
Yilwatda who later interacted with different groups told the people that he was in the governorship race with determination to make a significant difference in governance.
“Some existential challenges confronting the state such as insecurity, ethnic disharmony and perennial poverty were the fundamental problems the state was grappling with,” he said.
Retired Col. Fidelis Attahiru, the Long Kwo, who spoke on behalf of the traditional council, said that Qua’an Pan was the only LGA in the state that was not connected to the national grid.
Attahiru urged Yilwatda to make the connection of Qua’an Pan to national grid his priority project if elected.
