The Speaker of Gombe State House of Assembly, Abubakar Muhammad Luggerewo, was on Saturday was pressed to resign by some aggrieved members of the assembly for allegedly failing to organize the House to present its position to the National Assembly on the proposed alteration of the 1999 Constitution.
The aggrieved lawmakers jointly called for the Speaker’s resignation at a session with journalists yesterday accusing him of sinister moves by dragging his feet in mobilising the House to their position on behalf of the people of the state at the proposed constitution review which ended last Thursday.
Out of the 24 members of the assembly, seven lawmakers have signed the statement. The seven lawmakers, who jointly signed the address, said if the Speaker could no longer lead the House, then he should resign and allow another competent person to take over the affairs of the House so that the legislature could performance its constitutional role.
Also, the aggrieved members demand immediate convocation of the assembly on Tuesday next week to enable them give concurrence to the bill for consideration, or in the alternative, to pave way for a capable hand that has the people of Gombe State at heart and interested in building strong institution for the survival of our democracy to take over.
“We want to put it on record that the leadership of the House, in particular, the Speaker, has been employing various tactics to frustrate the process and disenfranchise the good people of Gombe from making their voices heard through us their representatives.” Spokesman for the group, Ibrahim Rambi Ayala representing Billiri East Constituency said.
However, the Speaker Muhammed Luggerewo while speaking with journalists in Gombe said the House has no choice but to follow the rules of House in detail.
He said, the option is however there for any aggrieved members to go court adding that he can only speak and work for the majority members of the House.
“There is nothing true in all these allegations. The house committee met this last Monday. So, what do they mean by saying we have not sat for three months? I am not bothered by their actions.
“I can only tell them that I am the Speaker for the majority members of the House. If they are aggrieved, there are options for them to take. As far as I am concerned, we are on course, the government of the state has provided all the resources we needed to carry out this assignment,” he said.
Luggerewo representing Akko central, succeeded Abubakar Ibrahim after he was impeached by the 24-member house in 2020.
