The fate of Rivers State Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike at both the PDP presidential primary and the party’s subsequent choice of running mate for Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate, is generating notable resignations within the party in the North-East Zone.
The party’s Zonal Treasurer, Galadima Abba Itas, a top-notch sympathizer of Gov. Wike, has resigned both his position and membership of the party due to what he believes as injustice committed against the governor at both instances.
He did not, however, disclose his next political move.
“I write to tender my resignation as zonal treasurer (North-East) and a member of People’s Democratic Party (PDP),” Itas announced in a letter dated Tuesday, 12th July and addressed to the party’s Itas Ward Chairman, Itas-Gadau Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
“My resignation was as a result of wide consultations with my teaming supporters, political associates and in response to the unfair and unjust treatment extended to His Excellency, But Nyesom Ezenwo Wike CON, the Exceutive Governor of Rivers State, during and after the presidential primary convention,” he said.
“The unorthodox selection of His Excellency Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as running mate to the presidential candidates contradicts my political principles and Ideologies hence further consolidated my resignation decision,” the former PDP official said.
He posited that unjust and unfair treatment of the party’s founding members posed a great threat to the collective political interest of its leaders and members.
“The present situation in the party does not inspire confidence that the party is ready to regain power in 2023,” he observed.
He thanked the party for affording him the opportunity to serve it.
