The Ondo House of Assembly on Wednesday urged the state Ministry of Environment to develop a blueprint on waste management and tackling environmental hazards in the state.
This followed the adoption of a motion by the Majority Leader, Mr Oluwole Ogumolasuyi after an interactive session with a team from the ministry, led by its commissioner, Mr Sunday Akinwalere in Akure.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the House had earlier at plenary observed mounting waste and other environmental problems across the state prompting the invitation of stakeholders from the ministry.
Speaker Bamidele Oleyelogun called on the ministry to initiate a waste management structure that would re-enact the cleanliness which the state was known for.
Oleyelogun urged the ministry to furnish the House with the roles of all agencies in charge of waste management in the state as well as areas where the House could be of help.
He also urged the ministry to explore the possibilities of generating wealth from wastes as well as actively engaging youths in its activities.
The speaker urged the ministry to evolve measures of preventing flooding especially in the rain season adding that the House would review the law establishing the ministry with a view to introducing modern technology.
The state’s Commissioner for Environment, Mr Sunday Akinwalere commended the lawmakers for their concern on the cleanliness of the state.
Akinwalere said the State Government has procured two additional amphibious excavators to aid dredging of river channels in the state.
He solicited for the support of the lawmakers in the area of funding and pledged to work on all observations raised by the House in order to address current environmental challenges in the state.
