The National Population Commission (NPC) on Monday began training for its federal commissioners and the chairman in preparation for the 2022 Population and Housing Census (PHC).
Alhaji Isa Kwarra, Executive Chairman of the Commission, said the goal of the training was to engender deeper and common understanding of the Strategies and Methodology of the 2022 Population and Housing Census.
Kwarra, who reiterated the commitment of the commission to a reliable and credible census, said the training was key to achieving that.
“The goal of the training is to engender deeper and common understanding of the Strategies and Methodology of the 2022 Population and Housing Census among top functionaries of the commission.
“The specific objectives are: To review history of census taking in Nigeria and consider lessons learnt to familiarise the body of the commission with the United Nations principles and Recommendations for best practices in Population and Housing Census.”
The Chairman urged top functionaries of the commission to avail themselves of the specific objectives.
Kwarra emphasised the imperatives of introducing effective communication skills and public management during the census and introduce participants to risks inherent in census project and mitigation plans to acquaint participants with the census methodology and instruments.
He said that the conduct of the training underscored the determination and readiness of the commission to deliver on its mandate of conducting a credible and reliable census.
Mr Ipalibo Harry, Federal Commissioner, Rivers said that the census would be done by means of data processing.
Harry, who called for inclusive census, said it required the commitment and preparedness of the commission.
Dr Eyitayo Oyetunji, Federal Commissioner, Oyo expressed the determination of the commission to deliver on credible and reliable census.
Oyetunji described the ongoing training as part of the commission’s determination to give Nigerians a first of its kind digital census.
