Mr Tella Adekunle, an insurance underwriter, says it is important for Nigerians to have health insurance policy to improve access to health care.
Adekunle told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin on Monday, that people should not have to be compelled to buy health insurance.
According to him, just about a small per cent of Nigerians have health insurance. Take a visit to health facilities around the country, you will see how Nigerians die from avoidable causes.
“Victims of accident and chronic illnesses linger and suffer as they cannot afford the hospital bills.
“Although health insurance is relatively new in this market, it is very essential people embrace it when they have their health intact.’’
Adekunle, a member of Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria, also advised Nigerians to embrace life insurance, saying it was a guaranteed means of transferring wealth to future generations..
“Depending on the type of life insurance selected, an endowment policy for instance will pay the life assured the capital sum at maturity if they survive it.
“If death occurs before the policy expires, the designated beneficiary is paid, the policy also could include pay-out following critical illness.
“Life insurance policy will definitely not bring back the dead, it could create a timely financial intervention in the event of such illnesses that would save lives.
“For a life that has passed, a life assurance will no doubt be a good support for the bereaved.
