Barely four months after the closure of schools as a result of the outbreak of the novel Coronavirus, schools in Gombe state on Monday reopened to allow the primary 6, JSS 3 and SS 3 students to prepare ahead of their respective final year examinations.
Recall that the Federal Government had earlier directed that students in exit classes across the country be allowed to resume on August, 4, 2020, ahead of their forthcoming examinations.
In line with the FG’s directives, the Gombe state government directed all the students in exit classes across the state to resume on Monday, August 10, 2020.
In compliance with the directives of the state government, both private and public primary and secondary schools in Gombe reopened for their exit students.
Our correspondent who visited some schools in Gombe metropolis, reported that water, soaps, hand sanitizers, infrared thermometers were provided by the schools.
Also, compulsory wearing of facemasks and social distancing in classrooms were observed by students and teachers.
At Coica Model Primary School, Barunde, students were being ushered into the premises with strict compliance adherence to the COVID-19 guidelines.
Ibrahim Yahaya Sasa, Headmaster of the school told our correspondent that he is satisfied with the turnout of both the teachers and the students.
“Although today is the first day that the school is resuming, 80% of both the teachers and students report back to school.”
“We have 40 students in Class six and we have divided them into two different classes. Each student will have his seat so as to practice social distancing.” He said.
Similarly, at the Government Day Secondary School Herwagana, it was observed that hand washing materials and hand sanitizers were provided at the entrance and other strategic points in the premises.
Principal of the school, Malam Adamu Abubakar told our correspondent that the school followed the COVID-19 prevention guidelines.
“We have mandated that students must wear facemask and sanitize their hands before they are allowed into the school premises.” He said.
He added that only SS 3 students resumed and that the school was doing revision to prepare the students for the forthcoming exams.
Sadik Haruna Ibrahim, student of the school said he was ready to write the WASSCE as it was gathered by Daylight Reporters.
He said he studied hard during the break with the assistance of his uncle at home.
“The classes we are having now is to help me revise all I have studied and prepare for the exams.” He said.
Hasiya Ismail, a female SS 3 student in the school said she read every day during the stay-at-home period and participated in the revision programs aired in Radio by the state government.
At JIBWIS Islamic Science Secondary School, Gombe, Principal of the school said that his SS 3 are ready for the upcoming examinations.
Students were seen in their respective classes receiving lectures in strict compliance with the stated protocols.
