Two suspected armed robbers terrorising Ughelli, Afiesere and environ were this morning burnt to death by angry mobs.
The incident which attracted residents of Afiesere Community and others caused serious traffic jam along the Ughelli-Afiesere Road as people troop down to witness the scene.
According to an eyewitness account, who did not disclose his name for security reasons. the two-armed robbers attacked one Mrs Gold in Afiesere, dispossessing her at gunpoint, the sum of N800,000 (eight hundred thousand naira).
He narrated further that while the two robbers were trying to escape with their tricycle, the woman raised alarm and some youths of the community gave them a hot chase and they were apprehended at the Afiesere Bridge.
He said upon searching them, two cut to size guns were seen with them and this prompted the angry youths to beat them to a pulp before they were set ablaze.
It was also alleged that the same gang of armed robbers also recently attacked one filling station along Afiesere Road, dispossessing the manager the sum of N700,000 (seven hundred thousand naira).
Some residents who spoke to our correspondent commended the gallantry of the youths for eliminating the suspected armed robbers, saying that the community would have some respite.
Efforts made to reach the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for comment proved abortive due to network challenge.
Meanwhile, there was a prolonged shoot out at Opete, in Udu Local Government Area, between the community boys and men of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA last Wednesday
The shoot out, which began at about 3:30 pm lasted for about 20 minutes, terrifying both commuters, vendors and residents.
A commercial motorcycle rider (name not given), who witnessed the shootout while taking cover, stated that they (the witnesses) had no idea what happened or why the NDLEA were in Opete.
He went further to state that the NDLEA must have gotten reports about something illegal going on in Opete but no one was able to make contact with them.
As at the time of this report, it has not been ascertained the reason for the shootout and no casualty was reported.
