The first batch of Nigerians fleeing the fighting in Ukraine arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja Friday morning.
The chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Nigerian House of Representatives, Yusuf Buba told newsmen that 451 students had arrived in the country.
He was among government officials who arrived in Bucharest, the capital of Romania, to bring in Nigerians.
Abike Dabiri Erewa, chairman of the Nigerian Immigration Service, also confirmed the arrival of Nigerians on a Max Air VM602.
Nigeria is expected to repatriate about 5,000 of its children fleeing Russia’s war with Ukraine.
Many of them crossed into neighboring Ukraine including Romania, Poland and Hungary.
The evacuation of Nigerians was expected to begin on Wednesday but was delayed due to some strategic reasons.
